transformation occurs. The circus functions on many levels; on its façade it is seasonal entertainment, a romanticized fantasy, a display of danger and skill. When further analyzed, it reenacts age-old rituals in our collective unconscious, dream-like situations with archetypal characters acting out core human conflicts, such as overcoming their own nature. The performance moves away from verbal language to focus on the body, which becomes a monument to human transformation. In the ring, the artists take on the collective myths and energy of the audience; a power is given and shared within the tent. I am interested in documenting the private moments of contemplation and preparation between entering and exiting the spectacle of the circus: the quiet space, the meditation en route, the inner strength it takes to embody and then carry out the circus ritual. Backstage is the iceberg below the water; witnessing it gives a greater understanding of what is on the surface. and suicide of a close friend and my relationship with her. The book project is comprised of photographs and collected writings that Lauren and I shared throughout the six years we knew each other, and photographs and documents created now, after. Having been confronted by a haunting absence, I want to make evidence of her with my photographs. It is a challenging process to try to document something that is no longer here. I intend it as an investigation of loss and a look into the liminal space between deterioration and permanence, memory and photography. My process of examination is slow and reflective; my understanding of Lauren and the loss is achieved in part by visiting and revisiting sites that became markers of our relationship, influenced by my childhood summers, my family would spend time at the local public pool. There, I became more aware of different people outside my family and the separation between others and myself. I developed a curiosity about the wide range of individuals that comprise a crowd. The local pool is a public meeting place; families interact with one another and other poolgoers as they all share a common space. It provided me with an opportunity to focus on a diverse group of individuals in the context of a shared experience. Using the large format 8” x 10” camera, I isolated the subjects from the environment with a relatively shallow depth of field and used the high-resolution to reveal their skin in intimate detail. We go inward in our lives, psyches and homes in order to console ourselves. This project was photographed in Syracuse NY during a nearly record-breaking winter of snow fall. Being inside can build a manic state with the snow accumulating outside. The paper ties were made daily (or as close to as I could afford the time at work) as a creative challenge to myself. They were designed from materials I was working on for the magazine or ideas, or current events that entered my thoughts. The process became a creative outlet and a kind of performative sketchpad, as I would wear each new tie and clip it to my shirt and conduct my duties around the office. The tie was the message board for the images; with the tie shape in mind, it became a framework in which to encode a daily message. project, attempting to gain understanding of how I was changed after my father’s death. I am searching for moment and a recognition of something familiarly past. This selection of photographs was taken around my mother’s house where my childhood unfolded and includes objects touched by my child self and my father: a tent we slept in, a rocking chair were my father sat, a chest that was in my bedroom. These objects hold a silent record of me growing up and the photographs reflect back that desire to be witnessed. I have always been interested in the occult and the unexplainable, and I have certainly experienced things that can’t quite be explained. The group offers a democratic and supportive environment to explore the unknown. The locations explored are often charged with a collective history and often have been sites of previous acts of violence. Photography’s failure to properly document what is barely perceived makes the resulting images more of a document of the act of looking and the process of pursuit. There is a beauty in searching in the darkness: an act of openness to the possibility and believing. Patiently waiting in the dark and straining to listen and see, seeking the paranormal is seeking in ourselves the thresholds of what is human.
