Curiosity is at the heart of my practice
Jay Muhlin is a Rochester, New York–based photographer, visual artist, and creative practitioner working across photography, visual research, design, and collaboration.
Photography was my first way of exploring the world—observing closely, finding connections, and making the unseen visible. My work has expanded into research, design, teaching, and collaboration, but the goal remains the same: to ask questions, connect ideas and relationships across histories, and invite others to perceive the familiar with renewed depth and clarity.
I work with museums, libraries, universities, nonprofits, artists, scientists, businesses, and individuals. Whether documenting a collection, creating a portrait, designing a website, or developing a long-term project, I begin with observation, research, and conversation.
Alongside commissioned work, I develop projects that explore metaphor, visual language, and inquiry.
Selected Background
Jay Muhlin received a BFA in Photography from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA in Transmedia Photography from Syracuse University.
He has taught photography, design, and digital media at colleges and universities throughout the Northeast, and has worked with museums and libraries to document fine art, rare books, archives, and scientific collections. His work includes documenting the South Asian art collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and building a photography program at the Science History Institute.
Jay has participated in artist residencies including Visual Studies Workshop, The Millay Colony for the Arts, and the Contemporary Artists Center at Woodside. His work has been exhibited nationally and presented through exhibitions, publications, artist books, websites, and collaborations.
Commissions
For commissions and collaborative projects, Jay works through Lemon Juice, his visual research and design practice focused on photography, visual identity, websites, graphics, and print.
